Every paper savings bond has a unique serial number printed on it, and it's natural to assume that's what you'd enter to look up its value — many people search for exactly that. It isn't. Here's what the serial number is actually for, and what determines your bond's value instead.
The U.S. Treasury's published redemption tables are organized by series, denomination, and issue month. Every bond issued in the same series and month follows the identical value curve, regardless of its individual serial number. That's also why this calculator — and the official TreasuryDirect calculator — never ask for a serial number to compute a value: it plays no role in the math. The serial number is printed in the upper-right area of the bond, usually a letter followed by eight digits and another letter (for example, a format like A12345678B). It's separate from the issue date (printed elsewhere on the face) and the denomination (the large printed amount) — those two are what the calculator actually needs.
Treasury doesn't expose a public database that returns bond details from a serial number alone — that's a deliberate security measure, since serial numbers alone don't verify identity or ownership. Value lookups are designed around series/denomination/issue date (information printed openly on the certificate) precisely so a value can be checked without exposing any registry tied to serial numbers.
You're welcome to record serial numbers in the inventory notes field for your own recordkeeping — it's useful if you ever need to file a replacement claim — but it's entirely optional. The value calculation only needs the series, denomination, and issue date printed on the same certificate.
